Ah, movie tie-in video games – gotta love 'em, right? Okay, so they usually suck, but the best ones – or at least the ones that rise slightly above mediocre – are the ones that offer up a different story. Thankfully, Ubisoft's just-announced The Expendables 2 Videogame falls into that latter category, which will be henceforth referred to as E2V because I'm too lazy to write out the full name every time. While E2V is based on The Expendables 2 film that will be out in August, it's actually a prequel, with the adventure concluding "right where the new movie begins". Now one might be thinking, wouldn't the original movie be the prequel to the sequel? In fact, seeing as there was no video game based on the first movie, wouldn't it make more sense simply calling this "The Expendables Videogame" and leaving out the non-sensical "2"? Ah, but then we wouldn't have a proper movie tie-in, now would we? But I digress.

E2V is a side-scrolling shooter, where you can play as mercenaries Barney Ross, Gunner Jensen, Hale Caesar, and Yin Yang – characters straight out of the film. Your goal is to rescue an "extremely valuable, kidnapped billionaire." To do so, you can recruit up to three friends in local or online co-op. There will also apparently be challenges with leaderboards. "It's all business, until all hell breaks loose and the explosive mix of testosterone and kerosene detonates in a massive fireball that never lets up." No, seriously, that's a direct quote from the press release – I couldn't make this shit up if I tried. E2V will be released on PlayStation Network, Xbox LIVE Arcade, and the PC (as a digital download). No mention of a release date, but the film is hitting theaters August 17 (with the premiere August 3), so probably some time around there – though, knowing Ubisoft's track record, don't be surprised if the PC version comes a month later, when the film's already available on DVD.
