Many ardent Final Fantasy fans have been screaming for a Final Fantasy VII remake ever since the prevalance of high definition graphics. We have received some spin-offs of FFVII, a rerelease on the PlayStation Store, the movie Advent Children, and even the rumor of a Steam version, but Square Enix has remained tight lipped concerning a full on remake. Recently, we learned why Square Enix is reluctant to think of a remake and the news may not surprise everyone. Square Enix will not remake Final Fantasy VII until it creates a new entry to top the classic. To put it simply, the studio needs a Final Fantasy VII killer before an FFVII remake will ever happen. A new title will have to surpass FFVII in terms of quality and sales, which there has not been one yet. The original has sold over ten million copies since launch, while Final Fantasy VIII is the next closest at not quite nine million.
If an FFVII remake were to launch today, then there would be no reason to continue the series, according to Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada. All the employees would have to be committed 100% as well, something I am not sure Square Enix would be comfortable doing. I have been a fan of the Final Fantasy series since the beginning, and while I would love a remake of FFVII, I would also be upset to see one of my favorite RPG franchises disappear. It is a double-edged sword to be sure, and I think Square Enix is taking the proper stance in regards to a possible remake.
