eBay has announced that it is building a new data center in South Jordan, Utah that will be powered using alternative energy fuel cells. This will be the first major data center to utilize alternative energy as a primary power source. The data center will also be connected to the electrical grid to provide backup power if needed. The fuel cells are being developed by Bloom Energy, located in Sunnyvale, California. The cells are powered by natural gas, but also have the ability to operate on biogas. The new data center will double the capacity at the South Jordan site, with the center that is currently there still powered by the grid. eBay will only be getting 15% of its data center energy from alternate energy after this move, but it could be a sign that it is more viable for the industry to head in that direction.
