When it comes to game engines, studios can either license something like Epic's Unreal Engine or build one from scratch to suit its needs. In the case of Square Enix, the studio has employed both tactics for its games, but this time the designers are at work on something new. The creative minds at Square Enix have been working on the Luminous Studio engine to power its future projects, and have recently shown a temo demo called Agni's Philosophy. The Luminous Studio engine looks extremely powerful from this tech demo, but Square Enix promises this is only a teaser of what game graphics can look like.
The tech demo is set in the Final Fantasy world and shows a "life-changing encounter" for Agni, the magic-wielding heroine that is rendered in real-time. Yes, this demo is all real-time graphics that look pre-rendered, but everything over the four minutes is pulled on the fly from Luminous Studio. That right there is all I need to want every future Square Enix project running this engine, but my only concern is whether or not next-generation consoles will be capable of displaying it in all its glory. Computers should have no problem with Luminous Studio, so it is up to the console manufacturers to make this a reality.
