Dynamic Channels to Improve Multi-Hop Networks
When covering a large area with a wireless network, multiple nodes may be needed. These nodes will receive and retransmit signals to each other as needed, in order to get a transmission where it needs to be. When a particularly heavy bandwidth user is on the network though, the system may become unbalanced and cause performance to drop. Some new techniques have been developed recently to address this problem, and now researchers at North Carolina State University have created an algorithm to optimize the system further.
To prevent one user from interfering with the performance of the network, technology has been developed to separate the communication band into different channels. At first these channels had to be all the same size, but recently the technology has advanced to allow the channels to have various sizes. This allows a bandwidth-heavy user to utilize their own channel while everyone else is on different channels.
To further improve this technology, the North Carolina researchers developed algorithms that allow the size of the channels to change to fit the applications of the users. This way if the amount of bandwidth or channel width, a user needs changes, the network can adapt to maximize overall performance for every user.
