Rumors Abound for Facebook

A pair of rumors regarding Facebook have recently come to light. The first is that the company is still hoping to build a smartphone of its own. The pressure to diversify revenue streams could be ramping up in the wake of the companies recent IPO, and an unnamed Facebook employee stated “[CEO Mark Zuckerberg] is worried that if he doesn’t create a mobile phone in the near future that Facebook will simply become an app on other mobile platforms.” Building a phone can be extremely complex and difficult and Facebook has reportedly recruited several engineers that have worked with Apple in the past. The second rumor has Facebook interested in an acquisition of Opera Software to take advantage of its web browser for the phone and to help better compete with the other established browsers on the market.
