Back in August of 2011, Google stated its intent to purchase Motorola Mobility, the company that actually builds Motorola cellphones, such as the newly released Droid 4 and Droid RAZR. Such a merger would bring with it 17,000 patents, and an additional 6,800 applications to Google. Though the company assured everyone it would only use these patents to protect its Android operating system, and Android phone manufacturers, from suits, there is still the concern of Google abusing these patents in a monopolistic way.

Today both the US government and the European Union have given the action a green light. This is not to say they are not still worried about what Google may do in the future, it is just that such a merger is not illegal under their laws. However regularors in China, Taiwan and Israel must still approve the merger before it can take place. It may be a bit longer then before Google can start making its own phones, using Motorola Mobility’s manufacturing facilities. Also announced today is the US Justice Department approval of the sale of Nortel patents to a consortium including Apple, Microsoft, and RIM. It has certainly been a busy day in the patent world.
