Game designer Ken Levine and the team at Irrational Games actually listen to what the fans have to say about the studio's products. When the fans wanted something a little more challenging, Irrational delivered. The upcoming Bioshock Infinite will feature a 1999 mode that harkens back to a day when games were truly challenging and tested every ounce of your skill. This is more than just adjusting some sliders and adding a new difficulty level to Bioshock Infinite, as 1999 mode can be enabled on any difficulty setting. Once enabled, your choices are permanent and modern features like respawns and a plethora of ammo are gone. Any plasmid you pick or weapon you upgrade cannot be changed during your playthrough, and since ammo is limited, every shot you take has to count.

Irrational added 1999 mode to Bioshock Infinite because the fans wanted a more challenging game, and the studio sounds like it has delivered. The health system has been completely overhauled, weapon customization is essential to your survival (as is upgrading correctly), and every scenario you encounter requires a strategy, just like games of old. Ken Levine says you will need to save the game often, because if you die, there is no respawn but a good ol' "Game Over" screen. Good luck, you will need it.

Bioshock Infinite launches later this year on the PC, PS3, and 360. The 1999 mode is purely optional, but is there if you want to remember what games use to be like.

this sounds like bioshock "1" to me. you couldn't change your loadout and i didn't know about the respawn chambers until the second playthough when i finally died. I'm glad they are including a mode to force this.
