Doom 3 may be a little old at this point, but that does not mean it has faded away into nothingness. It was built on id Tech 4, which can still look pretty impressive today. Id Software has moved on to id Tech 5, but today the game studio has announced that the full source code for Doom 3 is being released for free to anyone who wants it. This will let anyone who wants to create games get a crack at id Tech 4, but John Carmack, id Software tech guru, says the studio is just waiting for some "final lawyer clearance" before the source code hits the Internet. When it does, I am sure it will be plenty popular and maybe in the future we'll see some indie games created with it. Hopefully, whatever games get created with the Doom 3 source code will have just a bit more lighting than the actual Doom 3 game.
