We've known that a new game in BioWare's Neverwinter series would be coming, but this time it will be handled by Cryptic Studios. Cryptic is the creator behind Champions Online and Star Trek Online, two MMORPGs, yet the new Neverwinter was announced as a co-op RPG. Today, however, that has all changed, as Cryptic has announced the upcoming Neverwinter will be a free-to-play MMORPG, a radical departure from the game's original plan. Both Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2 are single player RPGs with co-op elements, which Cryptic's Neverwinter was, at the time, going to be a strictly co-op affair. It seems the studio has other plans and will instead focus on what it knows best, MMOs. Neverwinter will feature free quests, areas, and expansions, but pets, "fancy clothing items," and consumables will be purchaseable. This new approach to the game also means that Neverwinter will now be released sometime late next year, more than likely because a good majority of the game will need to be overhauled.
Both of Cryptic's other MMORPGs are F2P, or will be once Star Trek Online switches over to the model later this year. You can probably rest assured that whatever game Cryptic Studios announces next will be an F2P MMORPG.
