Id Software's latest title, RAGE, released yesterday to some fairly good reviews. However, the PC version suffers from some technical issues not typically associated from the folks at id. Both AMD and NVIDIA have drivers optimized for the game, but we're still waiting for an official patch from id to fix the majority of the issues, like missing audio and texture pop-in. In the mean time, the folks at NVIDIA have been working diligently to offer some tweaks for RAGE, and have posted a how-to guide to help everyone get the most from the game. This guide is designed for both NVIDIA and AMD users, with the main requirement being a video card with at least 1GB of VRAM. The guide shows gamers from both camps how to unlock RAGE's high resolution textures, and if you happen to have a video card with 3GB of VRAM, you can unlock even higher resolution textures. The guide is posted over on GeForce.com, but it will help any PC gamer regardless of which video card you are running. The tweaks do require the modification of a .cfg configuration file, but the results are worth it just judging by the pictures the GeForce guys posted. NVIDIA users can take advantage of GPU transcoding, which the GeForce.com article mentions is due to CUDA, but AMD users can still benefit from the other tweaks.
The pictures below show RAGE with 4K, what NVIDIA estimates to be 5-6K, and then finally 8K textures.
