Producing Plastic Purposefully
A plethora of plastics have been discovered, but comparatively few have actually made their way into use. This is because the properties of a plastic cannot be known until a batch has actually been made. When no known plastic would be appropriate for a particular use, a great many plastics would have to be created to find one which will suffice, unless the researchers are incredibly lucky. Researchers at the University of Leeds have removed luck from the equation by creating a library of recipes for plastics with the ability to predict and select the properties of plastics. Taking a decade of research to complete, this research should greatly accelerate the research into plastics for exotic uses and made from renewable resources, instead of oil-based products.
