Today, when a light burns out your choice of replacement is primarily between incandescent and fluorescent bulbs. In the future there may be a third choice, and that future is coming sooner thanks to the University of Florida. Working to create a technique for low cost quantum dot-based LEDs the researchers found how to combine the materials found in organic LED panels with those of traditional quantum dots to create a hybrid LED. Quantum dots are nanoscale crystals that will emit light, like an LED does, but can be turned to a specific frequency by controlling the crystals’ size. Organic LEDs are more efficient and provide better images than traditional LCDs. To make the hybrid device would normally require two different manufacturing techniques, because the different technologies are made indifferent ways. The University of Florida has created a single device capable of creating the entire LED using a single technique. The resulting LEDs also demonstrated improved efficiency and lifetime, when compared to previous quantum dot LEDs. This technique may not be the final solution though, and future research will focus on still better methods.
