"I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee."

The Apple Board of Directors received a letter from Steve Jobs announcing his resignation from the position of Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Though many would say Jobs is responsible for Apple’s success, he has been suffering health problems for some time, causing him to temporarily leave his position in 2004, 2009 and again at the beginning of this year, from which he had not returned. The letter he sent to the board does not state if the reasons for his change in position are medical in nature.

Tim Cook, previously the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Jobs' recommendation, has been named as his replacement. He served as interim CEO during Jobs' leave of absence.
