OCZ has announced that it is upgrading its Z-Drive series of PCI Express SSD with the Z-Drive Revision 4, or R4 for short. A number of features seem to indicate that the R4 is geared towards enterprise solutions. The R4 features OCZ's Virtualized Controller Architecture 2.0, allowing for data centers to use a PCIe SSD as tier one storage solutions. VCA 2.0 provides a virtualization layer to interface with the OCZ SuperScale Storage Controller to provide processing and DMA cores, along with multiple physical interfaces. OCZ's Complex Command Queuing Structure provides queue balancing algorithms to help shift the burden to the card rather the CPU. As a result of all this, the Z-Drive R4 reaches throughput of 2800 MB/s and 500,000 input-output operations per second. According to OCZ CEO Ryan Petersen, “The Z-Drive R4 provides the best of both worlds for storage architects by merging the industry-leading feature-sets of both the pure hardware and pure software based approaches to data management, while maintaining user-configurable flexibility not found in other devices.”
