There is no denying that when it comes time to benchmark your new computer, programs by Futuremark top the list. Gamers are usually interested in the 3DMark line, but for an overall system benchmark there is PCMark. Today, Futuremark is announcing PCMark 7 which is designed just for Windows 7 users. PCMark 7 combines seven separate test suites which which more than twenty individual workloads covering storage, computation, web browsing and gaming, and image and video manipulation. Futuremark says that PCMark 7 is designed to cover a wide range of systems, from netbooks to tablets to desktops, and even will test out your new SSD to see if it's up to snuff. There will be a Lightweight Suite which is designed for entry-level systems and portable platforms (presumably tablets and netbooks) unable to run the full suite. Common use performance will be measured by the Entertainment, Productivity, and Creativity scenario suites. Component performance will be measured by the Computation and Storage hardware suites, with the Storage option being ideal to test SSDs and external hard drives as well.

Futuremark issued no release date or pricing with this announcement, but expect that to be revealed before long.
