At Nokia's Capital Markets Day today, it announced something that had been rumored for a little while now. Nokia and Microsoft have announced a partnership, one that will see Nokia using Windows Phone 7 as the primary OS which makes for a dramatic turn of events for the Finnish phone maker. Nokia will also embrace various other Microsoft services, like Bing. What this means for Symbian and MeeGo is not good, as Symbian will basically be abandoned and phased out by year's end for smartphones. Some of the Symbian developers seem interested in moving to Android even. As for MeeGo, Nokia is planning on releasing one product by year's end and having it turn into an experimental platform with a diminished staff. The partnership means that Nokia's strong hardware will be getting the benefit of Microsoft's potentially strong software, though WP7 is still in its infancy and there is no telling how well received it will be later on.

Nokia's CEO Stephen Elop has said that 2011 and 2012 will be "transitional" years for his company and there was no firm date on when we'd all see a Nokia-based Windows Phone 7 device. As for Microsoft, having one of the strongest hardware makers could be highly beneficial but then again, it could scare away other companies depending on how successful Nokia is. At any rate, it is a bit of a gamble for Microsoft and Nokia to join up but if it pays off, the rewards could be huge.
