Smartphones Outsold PCs in Last Quarter of 2010
If you ever had any doubt about smartphones replacing a PC, look no further than the latest sales numbers from IDC. The analysis firm shows that smartphones sold 100.9 million units in the fourth quarter of 2010, while there were only 92.1 million PCs sold in that time. Now, that is a record number of PC sales but it is overshadowed by the sheer number of smartphones sold around the holiday season. This is the first quarter ever that smartphones have outsold PCs and with the recent trend, it doesn't seem like PCs can overtake the lead anytime soon. IDC and other firms may have to redo the nomenclature depending on where the smartphone market heads in the next few years, and considering that some of them are as powerful as PCs, I can see why.
