Samsung Announces First DDR4 DRAM Modules While DDR3/DDR2 Prices Keep Falling

Samsung announced this week it has completed development on the industry's first DDR4 DRAM module. The chips are based on the 30nm production methodology, allowing the chips to run from 1.6 up to 3.2Gbps at 1.2V. That represents a doubling of speed over existing 1.6Gbps DDR3 modules that operate at 1.35V and 1.5V. Samsung is continuing to work with its industry partners over the remainder of the year in an effort to complete EDEC standardization of DDR4 technologies.

Concurrently, figures from market research company iSuppli show that prices for DDR3 and DDR2 memory chips continue to decline. Contract prices on Dec. 10 had dropped more than 50% from six months earlier with a 2GB DDR3 DRAM module going for $21. Price declines for DDR2 were not as steep, with prices going from $21.50 in December as compared to $38.80 in June.

So there you have it, faster memory is on the horizon with current memory prices dropping - not a bad combination for consumers.
