You have to love the days leading up to the annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas as manufacturers take advantage of the venue to announce new product launches. Of course OCC will be providing coverage of CES 2011, but in the mean time let's look at the latest processors from AMD. The company has upgraded its Phenom II product lineup with two new quad-core chips - the X4 975 BE and the X4 840. As these are refreshes to its current model offerings, both are AM3 socket chips with support for DDR3 and DDR2 memory, HyperTransport 3.0 and more. The Phenom II X4 840 comes in at the low end of the lineup and differs from other Phenom II X4 processors in that it has no L3 cache, which allows AMD to offer a 3.2GHz four-core processor for around $100. The second chip being introduced moves to the other end of the performance scale and that is the Phenom II X4 975 Black Edition processor which now occupies the flagship processor spot with its 3.6GHz speed.
