With the recent release of the Kinect, it was only a matter of time before it would be usable on desktop systems. It didn't take long, and two drivers are already in the works. The NUI Group is working on a Windows driver and SDK to take full advantage of the Kinect functionality. They plan to release their work as open source after receiving $10,000 in donations. However, Hector Martin was able to gain access to the IR and RGB cameras within three hours, and has made his code publicly available. The functionality is pretty limited for now, but it is a great start. Follow the link for a video of it in action.
