WiGig and VESA Team Up to Promise Wireless DisplayPort

The Wireless Gigabit Alliance (WiGig Alliance) has just announced a new partnership just months after partnering with the WiFi Alliance. The partner this time is the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) which pushes for global display standards. WiGig and VESA are teaming up to work on the next wireless display technology, this time for the DisplayPort. WiGig's technology allows for 1080p, 60Hz content to be streamed wirelessly from a computer to a big screen TV. However, the adoption rate hasn't been the highest so perhaps the new partnership between WiGig and VESA for DisplayPorts will help to reach a broader market. A lot of laptops and computers are coming with a DisplayPort as standard so, depending on when the alliance meets its goal, we should have a plethora of devices able to send content wirelessly to supporting TVs. Specifications for the new DisplayPort wireless standard is expected to be published early next year so perhaps a prototype can be shown at CES.
