Android Dominates US Smartphone Market

Category: Mobile
Posted: 08:45AM

Apple may be gaining in popularity worldwide, having just surpassed the Blackberry from Research in Motion, but devices running the Android OS eclipsed the iOS from Apple. Data released by Canalys showed that Android devices accounted for 43.6% of smartphone shipments in the United States in the third quarter, up 1,309% from the same time last year. This number represents devices from manufacturers in the Open Handset Alliance, including Samsung, HTC, and Motorola among others. Between all manufacturers, 9.1 million handsets were sold, while Apple sold 5.5 million devices. Apple doesn't seem to be hurting from this, as it just had its best quarter ever.

Apple has a "monopoly" on iOS phones, whereas those numbers for Android OS are split amongst several manufacturers, so yeah, Apple's more than fine.

Obviously they are fine. But Android is gaining in popularity, which is the point here. :)

Gaining popularity, yes, but I think stating that it's dominating the market is a little misleading. Has any one Android-based phone sold 5.5 million devices? I honestly don't know the answer to that, but I doubt it. Simply put, there are more choices out there for Android phones, so, in essence, the odds are in its favor.

Does anyone have a Droid2 or DroidX phone? I read an article that they have an app to overclock it to 2.0GHz.
