Hitachi GST has begun to ship its new hard drive, the Ultrastar C10K600. The new drive joins its enterprise lineup, and will be available in capacities of 300GB, 450GB, and 600GB. Although no price has been released, enterprise drives usually command a premium over drives typically used by consumers. The 10K RPM drive fits into a 2.5 inch form factor, and features two 6Gb/s SAS ports. Hitachi claims improvements of 15% and 18% in random and sequential performance, respectively. If these estimates are true, then it should prove to be popular in comparison to the competition. In addition to being faster, Hitachi claims that it uses 22% less power than competing products. Speed and power efficiency would make it great for data centers and servers.
