Canonical has released Ubuntu 10.10, code named Maverick Meerkat. The newest version brings a host of updates and new features. The desktop environment has been updated to GNOME 2.32, which should help the transition when GNOME 3 becomes available. The Software Center has received a new look that should prove easier to navigate. Canonical plans to offer paid software soon and is currently testing the feature. The installer has also been improved, giving users the option to download updates during the install and install MP3 support. The most notable new feature appears to be the Unity netbook environment, providing for more efficient use of the limited real estate available on the small devices. Cloud storage through Ubuntu One has also been updated, giving users access to additional space priced at $2.99 per month for 20GB. The previous version of Ubuntu has brought my 5 year old laptop back to a much more usable state, and I encourage those of you with older hardware to give this a look.
