Microsoft Announces Windows Phone 7 Launch Dates and Handsets
Microsoft held a press event today to formally announce the availability of its new mobile phone platform, Windows Phone 7. Now, this OS is a lot different than Windows Mobile in that it is not trying to be a Windows OS on a phone, rather it is a phone OS with a Microsoft emphasis. The slogan being used for Windows Phone 7 is "Glance and Go" which is quite fitting since the OS has these Live Tiles that are fully customizable to display whatever information you want. There is also Xbox Live integration to play various games, including EA titles Need for Speed Undercover, Tetris, Monopoly, and The Sims 3. Other things that set Windows Phone 7 apart from the old Windows Mobile is the Metro UI which is quite nice to get around with, Zune integration which includes Zune Pass, Bing search and maps, Windows Live, the free Find My Phone service, and Microsoft Office Mobile.
Windows Phone 7 will include nine different handsets at launch, with a tenth being shown off ahead of its 2011 launch. Europe and Asia will be receiving the platform on October 21st while North America will get it on November 8th. By the end of the year, Microsoft will have Windows Phone 7 in 30 different countries on 60 different wireless carriers. Dell, HTC, LG, and Samsung will be making the phones and each will have a Snapdragon processor and a 480x800 WVGA touchscreen. The carriers at launch include AT&T, T-Mobile USA, Vodafone, TELUS, América Móvil, Deutsche Telekom AG, Movistar, O2, Orange, SFR, SingTel, and Telstra. In the early part of 2011, Sprint and Verizon will have Windows Phone 7 phones to round out the four major US carriers.
HTC will have four phones at launch and they include the 7 Surround, HD7, 7 Trophy, and 7 Mozart. Dell will have the Venue Pro at launch, Samsung will have the Focus and Omnia 7, while LG will have the Optimus 7 and Quantum. In the US, AT&T will be getting the HTC 7 Surround, Samsung Focus, and LG Quantum while T-Mobile will get the HTC HD7 and Dell Venue Pro. In Canada, TELUS will get the HTC 7 Surround and LG Optimus 7 while America Movil in Mexico will also get the LG Optimus 7. It seems there will be plenty of handsets to choose from in North America, while the UK, Spain, Germany, France, Italy, Singapore, and Australia round out the European and Asian markets. Which carriers get which phones in which countries are a bit too numerous to list here, so I recommend you check out the full list at the source link.
Now that Windows Phone 7 has an official launch date, will you be getting one? Sound off here or in the forums.
