Internet Explorer Global Usage Falls Below 50%

For the first time in its history, Microsoft's Internet Explorer has fallen below 50% for worldwide usage, according to StatCounter. StatCounter's latest research indicates that Internet Explorer usage fell to 49.87% in September, followed by Firefox at 31.5%, Chrome at 11.54%, Safari at 4.42%, and Opera at 2.03%. Although Firefox is Internet Explorer's closest competitor, it's actually Chrome that has been hurting it recently, as Chrome has more than tripled its usage over the past year, up from 3.69% in September 2009. Internet Explorer's biggest hit is coming from the European market, where its share has fallen to 40.26%. Microsoft's agreement in March with the European Commission to offer EU users a choice of browsers may have contributed to its decline.
