ARM Shows Off Cortex-A15 Processor, Able to Do Quad-Core Computing at 2.5GHz

Category: CPU's
Posted: 01:09PM

ARM has just unveiled its latest processor, the Cortex-A15 MPCore, that will run at speeds up to 1.5GHz for both single and dual-core solutions. For servers, there will be a quad-core version capable of running at 2.5GHz that will also support hardware virtualization. Along with the virtualization is support for more than 4GB of memory (up to one terabyte evidently) so this new processor should be able to handle any task in the smartphone and tablet world. ARM is claiming the Cortex-A15 to be five times better performing than current smartphone processors so it will be interesting to see what all will make use of it first. The Cortex-A15 will be built on the 32nm and 28nm process at first with support for future ones, like 20nm, to be utilized when it is available. The processor is available for licensing starting today with the main partners being Texas Instruments, ST-Ericsson, and Samsung. We most likely won't be seeing any products using the new processor for a few years at least considering the Cortex-A9 just started to show up in products, but at least there will be a nice performance gain when we do get them.

I knew i should have waited before i bought my Evo... its 1Ghz processor is no longer good enough, i Demand a 2.5Ghz Quad-core in my phone(Even though it said its for "servers"). Make it happen.

Look at the road map diagram. It'll pop into devices around 2012 - 2013.
