SRS Labs, the creators of much of the surround sound technology used by us today, has just announced that it will be making its surround sound encoding and decoding technology available to users of Microsoft Silverlight. This should come as welcome news to anyone who creates or uses Silverlight as now it will have 5.1 surround sound. Microsoft and SRS joined forces to help bring SRS' surround sound tech to millions of Silverlight users and it seems the possibilities are endless for what this entails. A ton of websites that stream TV shows and movies use Microsoft Silverlight as the foundation so this opens up the door for those shows and movies to have 5.1 surround sound. Not only that, but the SRS 5.1 for Silverlight will come with a toolkit to allow developers to decode and encode seamlessly which should give a lot of content surround sound. The surround sound streaming will happen over bit rates as low as 96kbps and will work on computers, TVs, and mobile devices.
