AT&T and BlackBerry held an event in New York today to announce a new phone. That phone is the BlackBerry Torch 9800 which is the long-rumored BlackBerry slider. The Torch features a full QWERTY keyboard hidden under the slide section, with a 3.2 inch touchscreen up top that features a 480x360 resolution. Below the screen is the usual optical trackpad so you get a choice as to which you want to use to navigate the phone. The phone also packs in a 5 megapixel camera with flash along with 802.11n support so you can connect to virtually any WiFi network you wish. The Torch has 4GB of onboard storage and comes with a 4GB microSD card packaged in though you can of course upgrade that to the maximum of 32GB. There is 512MB of ROM and RAM on the phone so hopefully everything will be nice and fast while getting around on it. The Torch also includes a quadband 3G radio so it should be safe to say you can take the phone to various countries around the world and still be connected. There is a new feature on the phone called Media Sync which will allow you to sync all your music and videos over WiFi. Various companies have tried this feature in the past but this has rarely been offered directly out-of-the-box so it will be interesting to see how well RIM can pull this off.

Also on the phone is the brand new BlackBerry 6 which is the new operating system being used by RIM on this and all future devices. BlackBerry 6 brings with it many new features as well as an overhauled UI. BlackBerry 6 also has a new WebKit-based browser which supports HTML5 so the browsing experience on the phone should be nice and rich. There is a universal search function, social media aggregation, and also the WiFi Media Sync. Not only will BlackBerry 6 be on all new phones, like the Torch, but certain older phones will be getting the new OS as well. So far, those include the Bold 9700, the Bold 9650, and the Pearl 3G.

The BlackBerry Torch 9800 will be launching August 12th on AT&T. The phone will cost $199.99 on contract.

There is a 15minute hands on review on YouTube going over a chunk of the phones features. They made the BB OS a much more user friendly system which should be much more popular with the "casual" crowd. For me, a physical QWERTY keyboard is a MUST, so this my be my first ever touch screen cell(and my 5th blackberry in 8 years). Seems snappy enough, and has some pretty neat bundled features as well. It's still a blackberry, but its now wearing jeans and a T-shirt instead of a suit and tie.
