ASUS CrossHair IV Extreme Preview Pics

Our friends over at HotHardware had the chance to take a sneak peek at the upcoming ASUS CrossHair IV Extreme motherboard recently, which looks to be a promising proposition for high-end AMD builds if the board layout is anything to go by. Utilizing the new AMD 890FX chipset, the board supports AM3 processors, including the recently released Phenom II X6 models. A detailed feature list hasn't yet been released, but from the layout you can see the use of five PCIe slots (which should make for plenty of multi-GPU setup options) and the presence of a LucidLogix Hydra chip that we have previously seen turning up on MSI's motherboard lineup. It is interesting to see another manufacturer making use of the Hydra chip and means you should be able to use both AMD and NVIDIA cards.

Being a board aimed squarely at the enthusiast, you can also expect a number of overclocking features to be included, such as Bluetooth RoG Connect functionality to enable the tweaking of settings using a secondary device. There are also board mounted power and reset switches, along with the automatic overclocking OC Turbo Key and Core Unlocker buttons (that should unlock extra cores on supported CPUs). These are all tucked up in the top right of the board adjacent to the four RAM slots, so should remain reasonably accessible in most reasonably sized cases (board mounted power and reset come into their own with a test bench setup of course). We will be looking forward to seeing this board put through its paces, particularly to see if the implementation of that Hydra chip provides any performances advantages over MSI's efforts. There is no official release date for the CrossHair IV Extreme as yet and of course no pricing information either.
