The proposed specification, known as WiGig, will provide blazing speeds, but it won't be without trade offs. Speeds up to 7Gb/s will be possible but only over a very short range. The 60GHz operating frequency will limit the range to about 10 meters. WiGig has received the official stamp of approval from the Wi-Fi Alliance, which will allow for sharing of technical specifications and includes WiGig in the Wi-Fi family. One of the most interesting possibilities for this is streaming HD video between decoding devices and HD screens. All devices that support WiGig are also expected to support current wireless standards as well.
