Versions of the Microsoft Office productivity software that include Microsoft Word are now shipping without patent infringing technology. In a case brought by i4i, it was ruled that the way Microsoft was using XML violated a patent held by i4i. Today marked the first day that Microsoft was no longer allowed to distribute its software using the XML technology. Microsoft has fixed the issue, and consumers won't notice any difference in functionality. In addition to changing the software, Microsoft was also required to pay $290 million in damages to i4i. Although Microsoft complied with the ruling, the company still intends to appeal it.
