Citing the AI found in the Left 4 Dead series, Valve has announced the beta testing of bots for Team Fortress 2. As the bots are still in beta, they won't be available on all maps, but reportedly have human reaction times and tactics. The bots are currently only available on King of the Hill maps Viaduct, Sawmill, and Nucleus. There is a forum to give feedback on how you feel the bots are performing. Bots can be added using server commands, but will soon have a menu to access them.

Why play with bots when you can play with other people? I'm not sure if they are seeing demand for bots or what.

If it's like CS:S, they can be useful to fill up some servers. When we had an OCC CS:S server, we'd have bots in the server which would automatically drop out as people joined. This way, someone could join the OCC server and at least get to play while waiting for other to join. Without bots, people are going to be less inclined to join a 0/32 server.

It's about time. They're helpful for small servers :)
