Activision revealed just how profitable its Call of Duty franchise has been for it on Friday. Since release in 2003, the franchise has accrued over $3 billion in global retail sales. The newest iteration of the series, Modern Warfare 2, sold over $550 million in its first five days alone. A total of more than 55 million copies of the series have been sold worldwide. The games industry has begun to feel the effects of the global economic downturn, but with games like Call of Duty and World of Warcraft, Activision Blizzard seems to be doing just fine.

It makes me sad to think that to these huge corporations, games are not anything but a means to make huge amounts of money. I think we've all known for quite a while that this is true of many publishers, but it is still kind of disappointing.

I kinda think Valve has gone that way, it has been over 2 years since Episode 2 came out and we haven't even heard any news about it. But we get 2 Left 4 Deads 12 months apart.

I meant we haven't heard any news about Episode 3.

I think that means the exact opposite. If they wanted to milk HL2 for money Episode 3 would have been in our hands years ago. :) Keep in mind Left 4 Dead is Turtle Rock Studios, not Valve.

Forgot to mention, Counter-Strike: Source is also Turtle Rock, hence the lack of adaptation to newer versions of Source, unlike Day of Defeat: Source. However, CS:S is one of those games where the community fuels itself.

Atleast every major HL game is a total step forward

I'm surprised their hasn't been more media coverage on MWII being pirated and their lost sales and what not. I'm also surprised Activision hasn't made a arrogant press release saying "look at us we broke sales records, imagine what we could have done if it wasn't for piracy"

If you read that comment there is no more Turtle Rock Studios and they made Condition Zero and some maps for CS Source, and they only made Left 4 Dead.
