Rumors that Apple plans to launch some kind of tablet device have been flying around the internet for a while now. While such a device is unlikely to be released this month, or even this year as many of the rumors have suggested, next year still looks like a good possibility. Apple has now given speculators even more fuel to go on by rehiring a developer of the failed Newton PDA, a tablet-like device.

After 15 years, Michael Tchao is returning to Apple Inc. where he will assume the role of VP of Product Marketing reporting to Phil Schiller. Product marketing? That's an awfully odd title for Mr. Tchao, a developer that worked not only for Apple but for Nike Techlab where he oversaw a number of the iPod+Nike products. Is this a PR move on Apple's behalf to stir up more discussion of the Apple tablet, an attempt to keep lawyers from Mr. Tchao's previous employer at bay, or will Mr. Tchao actually be marketing the rumored tablet and other devices? This sure brings up more questions than it answers.
