Gigabyte has announced its latest Super Overclock Series of high-performance graphics cards that takes the term "cherry-picking" to a whole new level. We've heard of hand-picked parts before, but Gigabyte has developed a new process called GPU Gauntlet sorting that utilizes a proprietary testing toolkit that allows engineers to inspect and select the GPUs with the highest frequency. Next the processors are subjected to additional tests including extreme graphics loads and tests to evaluate the power switching and stability. Only the best of the GPUs survive the gauntlet to become eligible for inclusion in the Super Overclock series.
The first card to be offered in the new series is the GV-N26SO-896I which is a GTX 260 model that has been factory overclocked with a core clock 680 MHz and a memory clock 2350 MHz; this compares to the reference design of 576 MHz/1998MHz. According to Gigabyte, this results in a card with 25% better performance than a generic GTX 260 and even beats out a standard GTX 275 by 3%.
The GTX 260 Super Overclock Series should be available sometime in early September at a price to be determined.
