As server enclosures shrink in response to need for greater densities in the data center, fitting standard sized components into smaller spaces becomes more of a challenge. Super Talent has announced a new set of very low profile DDR3 ECC memory modules designed for blade servers and embedded computers that are only .72 inches tall, nearly half and inch shorter than traditional DDR3 modules. As a result of the reduced height, the module consume 40 less PCB material and weigh 20 percent less as well; that saves on shipping costs and reduces the impact on the environment. An added benefit to the VLP modules is less constriction inside the enclosure resulting in better airflow, an important factor as cooling such densely packed components in a constrained space can be problematic. The VLP modules also include a thermal sensor that can measure module temperatures that enables the memory clock speed to be reduced to protect against overheating. The default clock speed of the DDR3 modules is 1333MHz running at CL9 timings. The new modules, part number W13VB2G8x, are now being shipped and are available from the Super Talent OEM sales force.
