Sony has officially confirmed the upcoming release of a slimmed down PS3. The system was featured in ads from both Kmart and Sears today, revealing both the looks and the $299 price tag. In addition to being smaller and cheaper, the Slim PS3 will feature a 120GB hard drive. The current model PS3 will also be lowered in price to $299, but will likely be hampered by the 80GB hard drive. The decrease in size, and likely change in components, will also cut the power consumption to 250 watts. The Slim PS3 will become available on September 1, and will be accompanied with version 3.0 of the system software. The ability to install an alternate OS will no longer be available, but users will gain the ability to sync with their Sony Bravia television.

I wouldn't buy one of these, when they shrunk the PS1 they sucked, same with the PS2. I can't think of good outcome for this.

In what aspect did they suck? I'm just curious.

They sucked because they flamed out in a couple monthes, same with the PS2 slim, when sony slims things they tend to break more.

As I said in the forum topic, the PS3 Slim looks incredibly cheap to me.

but its not cheap for anyone in the rest of the world. EB games here in Australia is advertising to pre order one for $499 AU. with the current $USD to $AU exchange rate the PS3 slim should only be approx $360AU. allowing another $40 for import duty and taxes and its still $100 over priced here. wonder if the reliability issues will be better or worse than the current ps3

What reliability issues? PS3s are a hell of a lot more reliable the 360s. Every single 360 owner I know has had at LEAST one hardware failure, RROD or otherwise.

:withstupid: I've had 2 RRoD's on my 360. My PS3, which runs F@H 24/7 hasn't had any issues.

i know about the 360 failure rate, i've had mine go RROD once before. i know ps3s are more reliable. but take a look on ebay, you find tons and tons of busted ps3s on there. there still is a reliability issue. don't believe me, i count atleast 5 faulty ones on the first 2 pages alone http://videogames.shop.ebay.com.au/Systems-/139971/i.html?_nkw=playstation+3+console&_catref=1&_fln=1&_sc=1&_sop=2&_trksid=p3286.c0.m282
