Britain's love of surveillance shouldn't come as a surprise to many, but its most recent plan may shock even the most paranoid pessimist. The Children's Secretary, Ed Balls, announced a £400 million plan to install 24-hour CCTV surveillance in the private homes of 20,000 "problem families." In fact, around 2,000 families are already under surveillance. These families are being monitored "to ensure that children attend school, go to bed on time and eat proper meals." In addition, private security guards will periodically make house calls to check on things. The hope is to reduce the number of children getting drawn into a life of crime and drug use because of chaotic family lives.
