Most of the solid state drives we see for consumer-grade applications such as notebooks are based on multi-level cell (MLC) technology mainly because they are cheaper to manufacture. Single-level cell, or SLC, drives are not as dense resulting in a higher manufacturing cost, but have many advantages over MLC drives including faster transfer speeds, lower power consumption and greater endurance in terms of cell wear. Those factors have relegated SLC-based drives to enterprise applications where speed and endurance requirements can justify the added cost. The OCZ Vertex EX series of SSDs is based on SLC technology and turned in some pretty impressive numbers using an Indilinx controller.
