Next month, look for ATI to slash prices of their HD 4800 series cards, by as much as US $50. The cuts, possibly due to low manufacturing costs, come right before ATI plans on introducing DirectX 11 compatible cards for use on Windows 7. The prices look to be as follows after the cuts (all prices are USD): $199 for the 4890 (down from $249), $149 for the 4870 (down from $199, not sure if this is for the 1G or 512 version), and the 4850 will fall below $100, to make up for the shortage in supply of the 4770.

Wow, I really love this aggressive pricing. Depending on how the HD5xxx series is, I might just get a second hd4850 instead of a new card.

so does that mean the current series cards will not be compatible with directx 11? I thought it was mostly just an OS issue?

No, the current/old cards don't support DirectX 11. However, most games and programs probably won't utilize this technology until about a year or two later. Also, DirectX 9/10 are going to be backwards compatible for a while.
