The recently announced Sapphire HD 4890 Atomic Edition has broken the 1 GHz barrier in clock speed. A level that was thought to be achievable only with the help of liquid cooling at minimum, has been broken with an “inexpensive” air cooler. The addition of this air cooler will likely drive up the price greatly, however. AMD claims that the factory overclocked GPU will offer superior performance in several DirectX supported games including Ubisoft's HAWX. Breaking the 1 GHz barrier with merely an air cooler leads you to wonder what can be achieved with superior cooling.
