A hacker claims to have accessed, stolen, and encrypted data from the Virginia Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP). The PMP was established in response to a multitude of cases involving prescription drug abuse, mainly Oxycontin. The hacker claims that he has all the data that has been gathered from this program, as well as large amounts of personal information including names and Social Security numbers. The hacker is demanding a $10 million ransom within a week or he will sell to the highest bidder. The information about prescription use may not be worth much, but the hacker is sure to be reimbursed for his time with the Social Security numbers.
