The Bluetooth Special Interest Group has announced that Bluetooth 3.0 will be released on April 21st. The new specification will greatly enhance the speed compared to current Bluetooth. Bluetooth 3.0 will employ Genereic Alternate MAC/PHY (AMP) which will allow it to operate at WiFi speeds. The 802.11 Protocol Adaption Layer (PAL) allows Bluetooth to link the devices and then hand the transfer to WiFi for faster speeds. This means that the devices must have both Bluetooth and WiFi capability, if WiFi is not available, the transfer will be carried out by Bluetooth.
