Envizions is releasing 100 beta units of its EVO Smart Console to the public. Sporting a 2.4GHz AMD Athlon 64x2 with an ATI HD 3200 and 2GB of DDR2 RAM, these units are available for $279-$350. Why the price difference? Well the less expensive one offers a version of Linux dubbed Mirrors. In fact, EVO is the first game console to use the open source Linux operating system. While this is an interesting idea for a console, I am not sure how it will compare to the Big Three (Microsoft Xbox 360, Sony PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii). Personally, I am not expecting an open source revolution in the console market anytime soon.
