As you know, with the release of Intel's new Nehalem processors, they now have the claim to the fastest processors available. But, as AMD have put it "The market for the fastest part is always small and in this economy it’s likely even smaller". Thus why AMD produces cheaper, less powerful processors. If AMD really wanted to, they could create an equally as powerful processor, if not even more powerful than Intel, but they choose not to.
