Battle Between Intel and AMD Heats Up

The latest news to come out of the Intel and AMD patent dispute involves some serious accusations. A lawyer for AMD has come out and said that they feel Intel is trying to kill their company with their move to break the licensing agreement with AMD. The argument centers on the recent spin-off from AMD, Globalfoundries. Intel states that since AMD isn’t the majority owner of the company that it cannot include it in the agreement with Intel. AMD counters by saying that they provided over 50% of the assets when it was spun off, therefore making it a subsidiary. Intel plans to break the license agreement in 60 days if the issue hasn’t been resolved, at which time it is expected that the lawsuits will begin. Those of us with interest in computers should follow this closely, as it would have a great effect on future prices if AMD were to die out.

Intel think they have the upper hand, but hence 64-Bit vs 32-Bit...people will just head for 64-Bit, it's the future, 32-Bit is so limited. Think about it, people would have a maximum of 3GB RAM, because AMD has control over 64-Bit...which theoretically supports up to 17.2 billion gigabytes, 16.8 million terabytes, or 16 exabytes of RAM. ALSO, AMD are already (allegedly) designing 128-Bit CPU's...how can Intel compare to that?

What are you talking about? Both AMD and Intel processors are 64bit already and have been for some time. It's operating systems that are moving to 64bit (which again have been around for a number of years)

*Sigh* AMD/Intel made an agreement, and x86-64 CPUs are allowed to be manufactured by both of them. IF Intel breaks the contract, they no longer have the right to produce 64-Bit CPUs.
