Seagate has recently demonstrated its new SATA3 hard drive interface using a prototype drive and a prototype controller developed by AMD. The new platform showed a more than double improvement in data throughput. However, these tests don't necessarily apply to real world applications and mechanical hard drives are unlikely to take full advantage of the increased speeds. The real benefit of this new standard will most likely be seen in future Solid State Drives as their design will allow them to take advantage of the extra bandwidth.
