OCZ's Z Drive Is Mighty Fast, Mighty Expensive

Category: Storage / Hard Drives

OCZ had pointed out its Z Drive in a press release of products it would be showing at CeBit this week, but there wasn't really enough detail to get excited about. Fortunately, Engadget dropped by the OCZ booth to fill in the gaps. The Z Drive is a PCIe (x8) connected device that will contain four 256GB solid state drives, a hardware RAID controller and 256MB of local cache. All of that means maximum potential read speeds in the area of 600MB/s and maximum writes at 500MB/s (400MB/s sustained). So that makes it both impressively fast and large enough to give you plenty of storage space to play around with. Of course this all comes with a large price tag, which OCZ believes will be between $1500 and $2000 when it gets released in the US in about six weeks time. Better get saving. Oh, and a 4TB version is also planned for later in the year.
